20250112             Romania's independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu believes that the Mihail Kogalniceanu military base located in the southeast of the country, which will become the largest NATO defense facility in Europe, will be used as a springboard to start a war against Russia.
20250112             "We cannot accept this," he said in an interview with former US Navy Seal Shawn Ryan.
20250112             Georgescu posted a video of the conversation on Facebook (banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).
20250112             The recording is also available on the Romanian Digi 24 TV channel's website.
20250112             "What is happening now in Romania gains no reaction abroad, no reaction from the United States.
20250112             They don’t understand what is going on here, because if they use Romania as a door for a war, what to be next?
20250112             We don’t need war; this is my point," Georgescu said.
20250112             "What will the implications [be]  if the NATO base is going to be constructive to conduct a major offensive into Russia?"

20250112             "Exactly this word - ‘offensive,’ which is a wrong way.
20250112             And we cannot accept this,  because this is not our business, not our war, again," responded Georgescu.
20250112             This is not the first time that Georgescu has hypothesized a war against Russia that would be launched from Romania, Digi 24 notes.

20250112             Switzerland is ready to serve as a host to a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, if such request emerges, Swiss daily Le Temps reported on Sunday.
20250112             "Following the Burgenstock summit, Ukraine, Russia and the United States were regularly informed of our readiness to support any diplomatic efforts regarding the peace settlement," the Swiss daily stated citing Nicolas Bideau, a spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, as saying.
20250112             The daily added that the Swiss authorities would not be taking the initiative regarding this issue.
20250112             According to Le Temps, the confederation is just one the countries on the list that are ready to host the meeting of the Russian and US leaders.
20250112             On January 10, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that preparations for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin were underway.
