20250101 MOSCOW, January 1. /TASS/.
20250101 Kiev’s refusal to extend a gas transit deal with Moscow has forced the Russian company Gazprom to stop gas transit at 8:00 a.m. Moscow time (5:00 a.m. GMT) on January 1, the company said in a statement.
20250101 "As Ukraine repeatedly and clearly refused to extend these agreements, Gazprom was deprived of the technical and legal ability to supply gas for transit through Ukraine from January 1, 2025.
20250101 The supply of Russian gas for its transportation through Ukraine stopped at 8:00 a.m. Moscow time," the statement reads.
20250101 The company pointed out that its five-year gas transit agreements with Ukraine’s Naftogaz on cooperation between the operators of the Russian and Ukrainian gas transportation systems had expired on January 1.
20250101 The deal provided for the transit of 40 bln cubic meters of Russian gas through Ukraine annually.
20250101 Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that there would definitely be no new contract for Russian gas transit because it’s not possible to make an agreement just days before the New Year.
20250101 Kiev, in turn, announced plans to stop Russian gas transit.
20250101 However, Ukraine is ready to resume gas transit based on a request from the European Commission as long as gas is not considered as "Russian," while the Russian president pointed to the possibility of contracts with third parties, namely Turkish, Hungarian, Slovak and Azerbaijani companies.
20250101 Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed the most interest in continued Russian gas supplies.
20250101 On December 22, Fico made a visit to Russia.
20250101 He warned that the cost to the European Union could reach 120 billion euros in 2025-2026 from higher gas prices resulting from Ukraine’s move to end Russian gas transit.
20250101 Fico also said that Slovakia could take reciprocal measures against Ukraine, particularly halting back-up electricity supplies to Kiev.

20250101 CHISINAU, January 1. /TASS/.
20250101 Gas supplies to household consumers have been suspended in the unrecognized Republic of Transnistria due to a shutdown of Russian gas supplies.
20250101 According to the Tiraspoltransgaz gas distributor, gas supplies to household consumers living in private houses and apartment buildings with independent heating were suspended at 12:00 p.m. local time (10:00 a.m. GMT).
20250101 Last week, Russia’s Gazprom gas giant informed Moldova’s Moldovagaz that gas supplies would be restricted starting on January 1, 2025, due to Chisinau’s refusal to address the issue of its gas debt.
20250101 The authorities in both Moldova and Transnistria have declared emergencies.
20250101 Meanwhile, Moldova has other sources of gas supplies so it’s only Transnistria that will have to face problems.
20250101 Still, the Cuciurgan power station in Transnistria, which is the main source of electricity for Moldova, ran on Russian gas.
20250101 According to the Transnistrian government, it has switched to coal and will now be only able to provide electricity to the left bank of the Dniester River.
20250101 That said, Moldova will have to purchase electricity from Romania.

20250101 DUBAI, January 1. /TASS/.
20250101 A record-high number of incidents related to Israeli settlers was recorded in the West Bank in 2024, Palestine’s WAFA news agency reports, citing the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
20250101 According to OCHA, last year saw "the highest number of settler-related incidents across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem".
20250101 "About 1,400 such incidents - including physical assaults, arson attacks, raids on Palestinian communities and the destruction of fruit trees - have resulted in Palestinian casualties, damage to property, or both," the statement notes.
20250101 The agency pointed out that some 160,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, had been killed or injured in Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
20250101 Meanwhile, Israeli troops and settlers stepped up attacks in the West Bank, which killed 835 people and left 6,700 injured.
20250101 Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants staged a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking hostages.
20250101 In response, Israel launched a military operation in the Palestinian enclave to destroy Hamas military and political wings and free all hostages.
20250101 Hostilities in Gaza continue to this day.
20250101 Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.

20250101 MOSCOW, January 1. /TASS/.
20250101 On the morning of January 1, the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine was completely stopped due to Kiev's refusal to extend the agreement.
20250101 The European Union may lose about 30% of pipeline gas import from Russia.
20250101 Over the last three years, about 15-20 billion cubic meters of gas has been pumped through the Ukrainian gas pipeline system to Europe, Alexey Bobrovsky, the director of the Institute for the Study of World Markets, has told TASS.
20250101 Without the Ukrainian route, Russia's gas traffic to the EU will slump to 39 billion cubic meters per year, the expert predicts.
20250101 In turn, Europe will see a further reduction in gas consumption and a shift to other energy sources, including coal.
20250101 According to TASS calculations, the total export of gas from Russia through the pipeline to Europe (including Turkey) for the past year may reach about 52 billion cubic meters against 49 billion cubic meters a year earlier.
20250101 At the end of 2024, the transit through Ukraine exceeded 15.4 billion cubic meters.
20250101 The European region may lose up to 30% of its pipeline gas from Russia.
20250101 Earlier, Gazprom said that Ukraine’s refusal to extend the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through its territory to Europe stripped it of the technical and legal opportunity to supply fuel by this route.
20250101 The pumping was stopped at 8:00 am Moscow time (5:00 am GMT) on January 1. Data from European gas transportation operators also confirm the end of supplies to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and Moldova along this route.
20250101 At the same time, fuel flows through the station on the border of Turkey and Bulgaria (the onshore extension of Turk Stream) remain stable, which indicates there is no redirection of part of Russian gas supplies to Europe along this route.
20250101 Earlier, polled experts told TASS that Gazprom had an opportunity to increase pumping towards Europe by 4-6 billion cubic meters per year through the Turk Stream and Blue Stream gas pipelines, because their throughput could be increased in a relatively short period of time.
20250101 However, complete reorientation of gas flows is out of the question.
20250101 The worst impact of a complete cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine from 2025 will be on Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Italy and Moldova, which will have to buy more expensive LNG or increase coal consumption.
20250101 For Moldova, and especially for Transnistria, an end to the transit even for a week would mean an unprecedented general energy crisis: it has no economic alternative to gas supplies from Russia, nor does it have any reserves of this fuel.
20250101 The country has already switched to electricity supplies from Romania after the Moldovan TPP, which was running on Russian gas, reduced output.
20250101 Gas transit through Ukraine
20250101 The agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory expired on January 1. It provided for the pumping of 40 billion cubic meters annually.
20250101 However, Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreement deprived Gazprom of the technical and legal opportunity to deliver fuel by this route.
20250101 The traffic was halted on the morning of January 1. Russian President Vladimir Putin said there would be no new contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, as there was no chance of renegotiating the agreement a few days before the New Year.
20250101 Kiev also announced its intention to stop the transportation of Russian gas.
20250101 At the same time, Ukraine is ready to resume deliveries through its gas transportation system at the request of the European Commission, if it will not be Russian gas.
20250101 The Russian president mentioned the possibility of concluding contracts for delivery through third contractors - Turkish, Hungarian, Slovak and Azerbaijani companies.
20250101 In such a case, the most reasonable arrangement would be a transfer of ownership of gas on the border between Russia and Ukraine.
20250101 The gas would be transferred to a new owner and the fuel to be pumped through Ukrainian territory would not be Russian.
20250101 The pumping itself would take place within the framework of auctions, in which European companies would participate.

20250101 WASHINGTON, January 2. /TASS/.
20250101 US special services are examining whether there is a connection between the terrorist act in New Orleans and the Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas, President Joe Biden said.
20250101 "We are tracking the explosion of a Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas," the US leader said in his televised address in connection with two incidents".
20250101 Law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there is any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans," Biden said.
